Oman: One Killed, 27 Evacuated from Ship Attacked Near Strait of Hormuz
Oman announced on Wednesday the death of a crew member and the evacuation of 27 others from a commercial ship after it was targeted near the Musandam Governorate, which overlooks the Strait of Hormuz.
The Omani Maritime Security Center said in a post on the “X” platform: “A vessel of the Royal Navy of Oman, in cooperation and coordination with the competent authorities, carried out an evacuation of the crew of the commercial ship (Cape Dao), which flies the flag of Antigua and Barbuda.”
It added: “27 crew members were evacuated and provided with necessary medical care after the ship was targeted 2.5 nautical miles from the Musandam Governorate.”
It continued: “The attack resulted in a fire in the engine room and the death of one of its crew members.”
Hours before the Omani announcement, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported that a cargo ship was hit by an unknown projectile while transiting the Strait of Hormuz, causing a fire on board and leaving it unable to move, without specifying who was responsible for the attack.
Oman's Musandam Governorate overlooks the southern bank of the Strait of Hormuz, one of the most prominent maritime corridors for global energy and trade.
The strait has witnessed disruptions in navigation since the outbreak of war in late February between Iran on one side and the United States and Israel on the other, amidst attacks on commercial ships and mutual threats regarding the security of the maritime passage.
