Prominent Yemeni politician Anis Hassan Yahya dies at 92
Anis Hassan Yahya, a prominent leader in the Yemeni Socialist Party, passed away on Sunday in Cairo, Egypt, at the age of 92, after a career in which he held several key government and party positions.
His son, Basil, announced the death in a post on social media, stating that his father passed away on the morning of Sunday, May 31, 2026, corresponding to Dhu al-Hijjah 14, 1447 AH.
He added that arrangements for the funeral prayer and burial will be announced later.
The deceased is considered one of the prominent figures in the Yemeni national movement and one of the most prominent historical leaders of the Yemeni Socialist Party, having been a member of the party's Political Bureau since its foundation in 1978 until his death.
He began his early involvement in national and union activities during his high school years, before moving to Cairo in 1959 to study at the Faculty of Commerce at Cairo University, from which he graduated in 1963. During that period, he was active in political and intellectual circles and was influenced by several nationalist and leftist currents that were prominent at the time.
The deceased was born in 1934 in the Crater district of Aden and was known as a political thinker and one of the influential figures in Yemeni political life.
The deceased received his early education in Aden, where he studied the Holy Quran before enrolling in formal education. He completed his studies at Al-Iqama School in Crater. He was also known during his school years for his athletic activities, leading the school's football team and later playing for Al-Ittihad Al-Muhammadi club. He contributed to the founding of Al-Rawda Sports and Cultural Club in the city of Ma'alla.
The deceased played a prominent role in the leftist political movement in South Yemen, contributing to the establishment of the "Popular Vanguard Party" in 1974 and was elected its Secretary-General. He later participated with other leftist forces and organizations in founding the Yemeni Socialist Party, becoming one of its most prominent historical leaders.
