The World Health Organization (WHO), a UN agency, announced on Thursday that it has recorded over 8,500 people killed and injured due to the military escalation in Yemen since last August.

In a report on the health and humanitarian situation from October 12 to 19, a copy of which was reviewed by "Almahriah Net", the organization stated that it had recorded 8,513 victims of the military escalation in Yemen, including 1,574 killed and 6,939 injured, as of October 19.

It added that the toll increased in the last eight days by 1,340 victims, including 292 killed and 1,048 injured, at an average rate of nearly 168 victims per day.

The organization explained that Shabwa governorate recently saw the opening of a new front of military escalation, alongside continued confrontations in the governorates of Marib, Lahij, Taiz, and Al-Dhale, noting that the death toll rose to 21.8 percent of the total victims recorded during the reporting period.

On the humanitarian front, the organization reported that the escalation has caused the displacement of about 256,591 people, representing 42,764 families, as of October 19, an increase of 28 percent compared to the numbers recorded on the seventh of the same month.

It warned of the deteriorating health situation in the city of Taiz, due to the continued closure of the main road through the Hayjat al-Abd area, which has resulted in severe shortages of medicine, fuel, oxygen, blood, and related supplies. It noted that the joint medical committee estimated the needs to keep five public hospitals in the city operational for three months at about $624,900.
