Taiz Faces New Waste Management Crisis Amid Continued Blocked Access to Main Dumps

The emergency committee in Taiz governorate has approved resuming waste transport to the temporary dump in the Al-Dhabab area, after discussing the risks and challenges facing cleaning operations, amidst the Houthis preventing waste trucks from reaching the Saleh Gardens landfill.
The decision was made during a meeting held by the committee on Tuesday, chaired by Governor Nabil Shamsan, to discuss the security, service, and humanitarian situations in the governorate, and to address the repercussions of the Houthi siege on essential services.
The media office of Taiz governorate stated that the meeting reviewed the challenges facing the Cleaning and Improvement Fund, the risks faced by workers while transporting garbage to the temporary dump in Al-Dhabab, as well as the report issued by the Health and Environmental Affairs Committee on this issue.
It clarified that the city has been relying on the temporary dump in Al-Dhabab for more than 11 years, after the Houthi group blocked access to the main landfill at the Sharab junction, noting that the recent prevention of trucks from reaching the Saleh Gardens landfill exacerbates the restrictions on waste management in the city.
In a related context, the meeting discussed food and medicine stocks, the status of hospitals and health facilities, and the humanitarian needs of the population, with the governor stressing the importance of intensifying field visits, following up on citizens' needs, and coordinating with relevant authorities to provide food and essential services.
The meeting was attended by the First Deputy Governor Abdul Qawi al-Mekhlafi, the Deputy Governor for Technical Affairs Rashad al-Akhali, the Chief of Staff of the Taiz Axis Abdulaziz al-Majidi, and the Director General of Police Mansour al-Akhali, along with other officials.
