Pakistani police and a railway spokesman reported that a passenger train derailed in central Pakistan early Tuesday morning, resulting in the deaths of 4 people and injuring 30 others.

Railway spokesman Kalim Akhtar explained that the train was traveling from the southern port city of Karachi to the northwestern city of Peshawar when it derailed in the city of "Sher Shah" in Punjab province.

He added that rescue teams recovered the bodies of the four deceased and evacuated the injured from the train's 14 carriages, noting that the injured were taken to the hospital for treatment, and emergency teams and paramedics were sent to the scene.

For his part, Farooq Ahmed, spokesman for the Punjab Rescue Services Authority, said that four people died and 17 were injured, while the cause of the accident, which was reported to the relevant authorities at 5:21 AM (00:21 GMT), is not yet clear.

In August 2023, at least 34 people were killed in southern Pakistan near Nawabshah also due to a train derailment; train collisions and derailments are frequent in Pakistan, as the railway network has become outdated.
