Bahrain and Britain Demand Firm International Stance to Stop Houthi Escalation
During a Security Council session, Bahrain and Britain condemned the Houthi group's repeated attacks on Yemen's west coast and civilian areas in Saudi Arabia, and called for a firm international stance to stop the escalation and counter its threats to regional security.
Bahrain's representative to the Security Council, Jamal Al-Rowaie, said that the Houthi escalation represents a clear violation of the truce and undermines security and stability in the region, warning of the severe humanitarian losses caused by the group's attacks within Yemen.
Al-Rowaie called on the international community to take a firm stance against the Houthis' behavior, affirming Bahrain's support for the Yemeni government in its efforts to restore state institutions.
For her part, the UK representative to the Security Council called for putting a stop to the Houthis, stressing that the group's escalation is carried out with Iranian support, and emphasizing her country's firm stance alongside Saudi Arabia and its condemnation of Houthi attacks against it.
The UK representative said that her country strongly condemns the repeated Houthi attacks on the west coast and civilian areas in Saudi Arabia, and the resulting severe humanitarian losses within Yemen, calling for the strict enforcement of the arms embargo imposed on the group.
The Security Council held an emergency session on the developments in Bab al-Mandab, Yemen, at the request of Bahrain, Latvia, Greece, and the United Kingdom, which handles the Yemen file in the Council.
