Rights Radar: Houthi Shelling of Aden Airport Threatens Civilians and Warrants International Accountability

The "Rights Radar" organization condemned the Houthi group's shelling of Aden Airport, considering it an attack on a vital civilian facility that endangers the lives of civilians, travelers, and humanitarian crews, and violates the rules of international humanitarian law.
The organization said in a statement that targeting civilian airports undermines the right to safe movement, violates the principle of distinction between civilian objects and military targets, and described the attack as a "full-fledged war crime."
It noted that the attack is an extension of previous attacks, most notably the shelling that targeted Aden Airport on December 30, 2020, which resulted in the deaths of 25 people and injured dozens, according to the organization.
"Rights Radar" considered that the continued targeting of civilian airports reveals, in its words, a pattern of disregard for civilian lives, stressing the need to hold those responsible for these attacks accountable and ensure the perpetrators do not escape punishment.
In a related context, the organization warned against the Houthi group's use of toxic or asphyxiating substances in its attacks in Taiz Governorate, and said that if their use is proven, it would constitute a grave violation of international humanitarian law, especially as the attacks occurred in populated areas.
The organization stressed that the use of prohibited substances, if proven, represents a war crime requiring criminal accountability for those responsible, calling for ensuring that those involved are held accountable and that impunity is prevented.
