Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo has announced his retirement from international football, following a career full of records with the Portuguese national team.

The Portuguese star posted a video on his official "Instagram" page, announcing his retirement from international play with the Portuguese national team after 23 years with them.

Ronaldo said: "The day has come to return the number 7 jersey of our national team."

The Portuguese star continued: "I never thought it was mine alone. But for 23 years, I had the honor of wearing it and bore the responsibility of it."

He added: "Today it is time to hand it over to the future. It was not an easy decision, as some decisions are not made by the mind alone, but also by the heart."

He continued: "The journey that began in August 2003 and changed my life forever has come to an end. When I look back on my memories with the national team, I don't just see the matches, goals, records, and championships, but I also see the people."

Ronaldo noted that what will remain most in his memory is his relationship with the Portuguese fans, saying: "Goals fade, trophies end up in museums, and records are eventually broken, but there is something that time cannot erase, which is the place we hold in people's hearts."

During his career with Portugal, Ronaldo won the 2016 UEFA European Championship and two UEFA Nations League titles.

Ronaldo scored 146 goals for his country in 234 matches played.
