Presidential Council member discusses Houthi escalation and its Red Sea security impact with Lavrov
On Saturday, Abdullah Al-Alimi Bawazeer, a member of the Presidential Leadership Council, discussed with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov the developments in Yemen, following the Houthi escalation on the West Coast and several fronts, and its repercussions on regional security and international navigation.
The meeting took place in New York on the sidelines of the eighty-first session of the United Nations General Assembly, where the two sides also discussed bilateral relations and ways to enhance cooperation between Yemen and Russia.
Al-Alimi reviewed the political, security, and military developments in Yemen, pointing to the damage caused by the Houthi escalation to civilians and infrastructure, and what he described as its repercussions on the region's security and freedom of navigation in the Red Sea and Bab al-Mandab.
He stated that protecting its citizens, territory, and sovereignty, and countering armed threats are among the state's responsibilities, stressing the importance of strengthening state institutions and confining weapons and sovereign decisions to its hands as a basis for Yemen's security and stability.
For his part, Lavrov reiterated Moscow's support for the Yemeni government, Yemen's unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity, as well as its support for the United Nations' efforts aimed at reaching a political settlement to the Yemeni crisis.
The Russian Foreign Minister stressed the importance of continued consultation and coordination between Moscow and Sana'a on issues of common interest and strengthening relations between the two countries.
