Millions of Moroccans Begin Electing Their Representatives in Parliament
Elections for the House of Representatives begin in Morocco today, Wednesday, with 27 parties competing for 395 seats in parliament, and about 16 million voters casting their ballots.
Moroccans residing abroad, numbering nearly 6 million across more than 100 countries, will not be able to vote directly at embassies, consulates, or dedicated polling stations in their places of residence. Instead, they will vote by proxy, using an agent in Morocco to do so on their behalf at polling stations.
Moroccan authorities addressed the issue of Moroccans residing abroad with the principle of proxy voting due to the non-activation of Article 17 of the Constitution, which would have allowed voting through embassies, consulates, and polling stations in their countries of residence.
Article 17 of the Moroccan Constitution explicitly states that the expatriate community enjoys full citizenship rights, including the right to vote and run in elections, specifying that the law will determine the conditions and means for exercising this right from their countries of residence.
