Pakistan: Time to Activate Mecca Agreement Amid Escalating Houthi Attacks
Pakistani Defense Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif said the time has come to implement the Mecca Agreement, following drone and ballistic missile attacks launched by the Houthis on Saudi territory. Coalition spokesman Turki Al-Maliki stated that some of these attacks were targeting Mecca.
The minister stressed—in statements to the local "Geo" channel—that Islamabad's commitment to protecting the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and its holy sites remains firm and ongoing. He clarified that this protection is a moral and ideological duty that Pakistan upholds even without a formal agreement, and is not contingent on the existence of the Mecca Agreement.
The minister revealed that Islamabad conveyed a Saudi message to Tehran, reflecting growing concerns about the attacks launched by Houthi forces. At the same time, he ruled out the possibility that Tehran—as a state—would support the Houthis in a way that would open a new war front in the region.
The minister added that Pakistan will continue its efforts to prevent the conflict from expanding and spreading to additional fronts.
Coalition spokesman Turki Al-Maliki had said in a statement that the Kingdom successfully intercepted and destroyed a hostile drone launched by the Houthis—on Tuesday evening this week—before it entered the restricted airspace of Mecca, describing it as a "shameful act".
The Houthis denied the Saudi accusation of targeting the Grand Mosque in Mecca, with several of their officials asserting that the group did not intend to attack Mecca and that what they launched was directed at military targets.
