Trump Advisor Reveals to Al-Mahriah Washington's Stance on Military Action Against Houthis
Gabriel Soma, a professor of international law and a member of U.S. President Donald Trump's advisory council, said that the United States currently does not want to enter into a military conflict with the Houthi group in Yemen, preferring to resolve the crisis through diplomatic means if possible.
Soma added, in a statement to "Al-Mahriah" channel, that the American position is mainly linked to the fact that American ships and interests in the region have not yet been attacked by the Houthis.
He explained that President Trump is currently focused on ensuring freedom of navigation in the region, noting that as long as American forces and ships in the area are not attacked, Washington, in his estimation, sees no need for direct military intervention or confrontation.
Regarding the U.S. position on any potential Saudi move against the Houthis, Soma said that Trump wants Saudi Arabia to make decisions it deems appropriate for its policy and interests, stressing that the United States provides the Kingdom with the military support and assistance it requests.
He noted that Trump does not currently want the U.S. military to intervene directly in a military confrontation, considering that Saudi Arabia possesses the military capabilities and weapons to take what it deems appropriate.
Regarding discussions about Trump's efforts to establish peace in several conflict zones, Soma said the U.S. President seeks to de-escalate situations, including in Yemen, and that the White House believes Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman is capable of leading his country through these circumstances via peaceful options.
He emphasized that Washington, in his view, provides significant support to Saudi Arabia and believes that Riyadh has the capacity to take actions it deems appropriate, including military measures, if it decides to resort to them.
This comes amid rising tensions in the region, with ongoing international concerns about the security of navigation in the Red Sea and Bab al-Mandab, against the backdrop of attacks carried out by the Houthi group and their regional and international repercussions.
