Atlético Wins Derby, Real Madrid Drops to Third Place
Atlético Madrid secured all three points after winning the Madrid derby 2-1 in the seventh round of the Spanish football league, forcing Real Madrid to drop to third place in the standings.
The first half ended goalless. Five minutes into the second half, Real Madrid player Dean Huijsen was sent off for fouling Giuliano Simeone inside the penalty area, allowing Grimaldo to score from a penalty kick.
David doubled Atlético's lead five minutes later with a close-range shot following a run by Simeone on the right flank.
Antonio Rüdiger scored a goal for Real Madrid with a header from a free kick in the 89th minute, but the response came too late.
Atlético Madrid overtook Real Madrid in the standings to occupy second place with 16 points, five points behind leaders Barcelona and one point ahead of Real Madrid and Real Betis.
