IOM: Nearly 130,000 Displaced in Yemen Amid Escalating Conflict
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) announced the displacement of at least 129,438 people, or about 21,573 families, in seven Yemeni governorates over the past few weeks, as violence continues to escalate and more families flee in search of safety.
The organization warned that the number of displaced people continues to rise, calling on the international community to provide support to the displaced and the host communities that share their scarce resources with them.
Othman Belbeisi, IOM's Regional Director for the Middle East and North Africa, said that many displaced people have had to flee more than once in search of safety.
He added: "The numbers are constantly increasing. On September 18, we registered 118,086 displaced people, and just three days later, this number increased by 11,352."
According to the organization's latest data, Taiz governorate hosts the largest number of displaced people, with 73,494, followed by the governorates of Lahij, Aden, Al Hudaydah, Abyan, Hadramaut, and Marib.
Belbeisi said that these families have "lost their homes and sources of income" and are arriving in areas already facing difficult conditions, adding that host communities are sharing what limited resources they have, but "cannot do it alone."
The official stressed that the organization needs urgent support for those displaced by the violence and for the communities hosting them.
