Contracted Teachers Dismissed in Coastal Hadhramaut Schools Amid Escalating Teacher Crisis
Schools in coastal Hadhramaut are facing new repercussions following an escalation and strike by teachers, amid declining salaries and deteriorating living conditions, as decisions are issued terminating the employment of a number of contracted teachers.
The Department of Education in the Mukalla City Directorate issued an official notice ordering contracted teachers not to report to work, attributing the decision to the legal expiration of previous contracts and based on legal memos and notices from the member of the Presidential Leadership Council and Governor of Hadhramaut, which stipulated not renewing contracts and completing the related procedures.
The decision comes as teachers escalate their demands for better wages and settlement of dues, amid fears that the dismissal of contracted teachers will impact the educational process at a time when schools are already facing challenges due to a shortage of teaching staff.
In a related development, the Teachers and Educators Syndicate of Coastal Hadhramaut called on all contracted teachers to report to their schools on Sunday as usual, to prove their attendance, and not to respond to any verbal directive preventing them from entering or starting work.
It added: If any teacher is prevented from signing the official attendance register, they should not leave the school, but instead document the incident, prepare a separate attendance and departure sheet for those barred from signing, record the day, date, time, and sign for arrival and departure accurately. They should also keep any circular, notice, or document handed to them and submit a copy of it, along with the attendance sheet, to the syndicate.
The syndicate urged the contracted teachers to avoid any altercations or escalations, to let the syndicate follow up on procedures through legal channels, to maintain calm and discipline, and not to give any party an opportunity to turn the demand for rights into a problem within the schools.
