Interior Minister Discusses EU Support for Coast Guard, Confronting Navigation Threats
Today, Minister of Interior Major General Ibrahim Haidan discussed with the EU Ambassador to Yemen, Patrick Simonnet, and the Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Jeannette Seppen, ways to enhance security cooperation and the support provided to the Ministry of Interior.
The meeting, held in the interim capital of Aden, addressed areas of joint cooperation and ways to develop it. Haidan expressed his hope for expanded European support in qualifying and training security personnel, in addition to supporting the Yemeni Coast Guard to enhance security and safety along the coastline.
The Interior Minister stated that supporting the Coast Guard would help counter Houthi threats targeting international shipping lanes and endangering the security and safety of maritime corridors.
Haidan reviewed the Ministry of Interior's efforts to enhance security and stability in the liberated governorates, amid what he described as an escalation by the Houthi group and its attempts to move the conflict onto Yemeni territory through its proxies, in addition to what he termed a collusion between it and terrorist groups, including ISIS, Al-Qaeda, and Al-Shabaab Somalia.
He noted the rising waves of displacement resulting from Houthi military escalation in the governorates of Taiz and Hodeidah, describing it as a security and humanitarian challenge. He called on the European Union and the international community to provide more support to address the consequences of displacement and strengthen the capabilities of security agencies in this area.
For his part, the EU Ambassador affirmed the Union's support for the Yemeni government and condemned the Houthi group's escalation and its targeting of civilians and facilities. He stressed the importance of international support for efforts aimed at protecting the freedom of international navigation and ensuring the security and safety of maritime corridors.
