UK Announces £10 Million to Support Displaced People in Yemen
The United Kingdom announced on Thursday an additional £10 million in funding to support thousands of Yemenis displaced by the escalating violence in the country, particularly in areas under the control of the Yemeni government.
In a statement, the UK's Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office said the funding will be allocated through the UN's emergency relief appeal for Yemen, aiming to provide food and nutritional aid for children, emergency healthcare for women, and vaccination campaigns for children.
It added that the funding will be implemented through several partners on the ground, including the World Food Programme (WFP), the International Organization for Migration (IOM), and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF).
According to the statement, the support aims to provide nutrition services for about 30,000 children, enable 35,000 women to access emergency healthcare, and vaccinate about 1,000 children.
The ministry noted that more than 130,000 Yemenis have been displaced as a result of the recent escalation in the conflict, leading to increased humanitarian needs among the affected population.
UK Minister for the Middle East Stephen Doughty said that the Houthis' escalation of the conflict in Yemen "has devastating effects," noting that the deteriorating humanitarian situation has increased the suffering of a large number of Yemenis.
He added that the new support package will provide health and nutrition assistance to those most affected by the recent escalation.
Doughty affirmed his country's commitment to working with the Yemeni government and international and regional partners, as well as continuing political efforts aimed at ending the conflict.
The ministry stated that on Tuesday, during their time in New York for the UN General Assembly meetings, Doughty discussed developments in Yemen and British support with the Yemeni Prime Minister and Deputy Chairman of the Presidential Leadership Council, Abdullah al-Alimi.
According to the statement, total British aid to Yemen amounts to about £104 million for the current fiscal year, and this new funding is part of the UN's urgent appeal to respond to humanitarian needs in the country.
