Urgent Meeting of Chiefs of Staff for Makkah Defense Pact
The Turkish Ministry of Defense announced on Friday that Chief of the General Staff, General Selçuk Bayraktaroğlu, will travel to Saudi Arabia to meet his Saudi and Pakistani counterparts as part of the Makkah Joint Defense Pact.
The Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs mentioned in a statement issued early Friday that the chiefs of staff of the Kingdom, Turkey, and Pakistan will hold an urgent meeting to "discuss ways to support the Kingdom in accordance with the Makkah Joint Defense Pact, and its provision that any attack on one party is considered an attack on all parties".
The meeting comes hours after a meeting of the foreign ministers of Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Pakistan to discuss the arrangements for the urgent meeting of the three countries' chiefs of staff, to discuss ways to support the Kingdom within the framework of the «Makkah Joint Defense Pact».
The Saudi Press Agency reported that Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan held a meeting in New York with Pakistani Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar, and Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, within the framework of the agreement.
On August 7, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif signed the "Makkah Joint Defense Pact" in the city of Makkah.
The pact aims to enhance regional and international security, peace, stability, and prosperity, and to increase joint deterrence capabilities in the face of growing instability.
It stipulates that an attack on any of the member states is considered an attack on all.
